Feilden Foundation launches a School Design Guide for East Africa, addressing urgent classroom needs in Uganda and Rwanda.

Uganda needs 168,000 primary classrooms in the next five years as populations rise, with Africa expected to reach a quarter of the world’s population by 2050.
Drawing on 15 years’ experience in Rwanda and Uganda, the Feilden Foundation has created a School Design Guide for East African countries alongside Enabel – the Belgian Agency for International Cooperation, Localworks Uganda, Buro Happold and Grant Associates.
Developed primarily for Uganda and Rwanda, the guide presents a series of recommendations for school design, covering everything from masterplanning principles and area schedule requirements to low-carbon construction methods, building services, sanitation, furniture layouts, and landscape design.
The event will feature a series of short presentations, beginning with introductions from Feilden Foundation Trustee and co-author Peter Clegg and a representative from Enabel.
This will be followed by an overview of the book’s subject area by co-author Meg Collin, a case study presentation by Juliana Achi from Localworks, and contributions from Buro Happold and Grant Associates.
The session will conclude with a panel discussion and Q&A, offering all attendees the opportunity to share their insights and perspectives.
There are a limited number of in-person places available, and the event will also be live streamed.
